Suggestion is a powerful tool and it can have powerful effects on our minds.
Himalayan salt lamps don’t really do anything that’s directly measurable—but a convincing pitch and even a reasonably impressionable personality could mean these lamps lead to dreams and nightmares.
But there’s no direct correlation.
Let’s find out more.
Do Himalayan salt lamps affect sleep?
Himalayan salt lamps have not been shown to have any real effect on sleep.
If we are talking purely in terms of measurable, quantifiable effects of salt lamps on sleep, there has not been any study that showed a marked difference in the quality of sleep caused by Himalayan salt lamps.
Now, this might seem like the end of the discussion, but as I said, there are many other factors at play.
According to those who are in the business of selling such lamps, they aid sleep by releasing negative ions into the air in your bedroom.
But there is no evidence to support this claim.
Even if this were the case, anything that releases negative ions can also release ozone, which can damage your lungs.
Negative air ionization therapy is something that is done, but it’s highly controversial.
Even then, these lamps simply do not emit the negative ions that they are claimed to.
So, scientifically and empirically speaking, Himalayan salt lamps cannot affect your sleep.
They do not do anything that an ordinary lamp wouldn’t do.
That said, placebo and suggestion, as I’ve said, are very powerful tools.
If you are open to these kinds of things, then a Himalayan salt lamp may well have an effect on your sleep.
The lighting alone could be enough to influence your sleep.
But, again, there’s no guarantee it will work and no evidence that it should.
Simply put, Himalayan salt lamps will not affect your sleep in any way that some other placebo sleep aid could.
It’s all about what you are open to, rather than the lamp itself.
With all that said, can these lamps lead to nightmares or vivid dreams?
Can Himalayan salt lamps lead to vivid dreams?
The short answer is that Himalayan salt lamps will not cause vivid dreams in the vast majority of cases.
Even in those cases where there seems to be a correlation, it’s more likely that there’s something else going on.
Let’s look at the mechanism of dreaming to help understand this better.
The simple way to explain dreaming is that it relates to our cycles of sleep.
We go through multiple cycles of sleep multiple times each night.
The deepest of these cycles, REM sleep, is where most dreaming occurs.
When our sleep cycles are disrupted, or indeed when they are more fully realized, this can influence how vivid our dreams are—and can cause nightmares indirectly.
So, a Himalayan salt lamp may cause more vivid dreams if the light affects how well you are sleeping.
For some, it might help them sleep better, and it may have the opposite effect for others.
Either way, this could influence dreams.
How vivid our dreams are is really a question of how well we remember them.
If we are more aware and less restful during REM sleep, then dreams will feel more vivid.
These lamps can only lead to vivid dreams in the most indirect way, then.
They will not have any kind of neurological effect which would cause more vivid dreams.
Are salt lamps good for nightmares?
Salt lamps may be good for nightmares for some people, in the same way that virtually any kind of comforter would be. I
t may even simply be a question of habit.
You get a Himalayan salt lamp to try it out, and believing it will work means it does, to a large extent.
Then, you are in the habit of having it on, and that routine means your nightmares are much reduced.
However, again, if we are talking in purely measurable, empirical terms, then the short answer is no.
There’s no real reason these lamps would influence our dreams in any way.
Are salt lamps good for mental health?
Himalayan salt lamps are not effective treatments for mental health issues except in the broadest sense.
Again, our brains are highly suggestible, and so these lamps can have a positive effect if we are able to believe that they will have such an effect.
Even if it is, again, simply that the lamp is part of a routine, they can have a net positive effect.
Routines have been shown to have a big positive impact in many cases.
However, mental health issues are broad-ranging, and we need to be very careful about how we talk about these kinds of treatments.
It can be a nice little addition to improve your mood, but it could also be a Band-Aid on a gunshot wound.
Don’t expect too much out of these lamps.
Himalayan salt lamps are an interesting phenomenon, then.
Plainly, they do work for some people in some capacity.
If something has a net positive effect, then of course it’s at least worth a try.
However, the simple fact is that most things that have a profound effect on us can be measured in some way, or at least demonstrated in studies.
This is not the case with Himalayan salt lamps—but that doesn’t mean they aren’t without uses.
